Choosing a lawyer is not like buying a new computer or hair dryer. Use caution relying on reviews submitted by people you don't know. I know lawyers who have tons of reviews and, guess what, I won't name names, but news flash, many were written by themselves or their friends. All they need to do is submit the reviews from different IP addresses to fool the website hosting the reviews.
Years ago, I knew a musician who bought his own music on iTunes by using computers with IP addresses in different regions of the US to fool the record companies (who check that sort of thing before offering record deals) into thinking his music was in demand everywhere. But it was all manufactured. Similarly, I used to lecture my little brother about the importance of having a job and building his resume. He ended up finding a work from home gig as a product reviewer, getting paid per review by the companies that he submitted good reviews for. I suppose it's good for business, but it's undeniably deceptive.
Speaking of which, I also noticed that some attorneys claim to be top trial lawyers or super lawyers or what have you. They advertise that they are recognized by organizations that have never once seen them do any work. These same organizations send me letters all the time, asking me to pay a fee to accept recognition as a top lawyer so I can post a link on my website and get a plaque and so on. It's fake! I signed up for an online profile with Avvo simply because I feel I must in order to stay relevant online, but they gave me a 6.9 rating despite having never seen me work. Meanwhile, I see lawyers who I would not refer my worst enemy to with 10.0 ratings. Smh.
While I understand that prospective clients like to read reviews to inform them of others' experience with our firm, in the world of criminal defense discretion is paramount.
Wisdom dictates that most, if not all, people accused of a crime would do well to avoid calling attention to the charges. Publicity or notoriety surrounding criminal allegations typically casts the accused person in a negative light, resulting in adverse effects on employment, academics and personal relationships, both in the present and in the future. This is often true even where the charges are later shown to be false, the case is dismissed or the accused is acquitted at trial.
Mr. Mitchell respects the privacy of his clients and he has NEVER solicited a client review for advertising purposes. On the contrary, Mr. Mitchell continues to advise every accused individual to avoid creating any further record of, or reference to, the charges, beyond those already generated by the reporting party, police and prosecutors.
Since I published this website, several saavy marketing professionals have advised our office to solicit reviews from former clients and asked us to purchase advertising space from their websites. We appreciate the marketing advice, but only provide references confidentially, by request.
Judges can be a good source of reference, as they see many different attorneys appear in court and practice law. See below, as Mr. Mitchell recalls one of his favorite unsolicited "reviews" in the form of a statement a judge made to a prosecutor.
Kevin recalls: Just before I was set to begin trial in a driving under the influence case, the Judge, who had previously presided over a trial I conducted, made the following remark to the District Attorney, in chambers:
"Have you ever tried a case with Mr. Mitchell before? He'll pick your pockets!"
